I've loved animals since I was a child. Unfortunately my brother was deathly allergic, so we couldn't have pets growing up. When I moved West for University at 22, I had a cat and litterbox in my apartment before I had furniture or groceries. After a few years in school, Ruby came into my life. One of 11 puppies in an unwanted litter, I needed a dog like I needed a hole in the head. But I couldn't say no, and in April 2000, she became
the love of my life. She has been my co-pilot in life for almost eleven years.
While in NYC at the ASPCA, I had the unique opportunity to work with animals that were victims of cruelty, abuse and neglect. A tiny, very long-legged Chihuahua mix came in with several other dogs from a pet store one day. The conditions in the pet store were unsanitary and unhealthy, so all of the animals were removed and the pet store was shut down. That little Chihuahua had my heart from the first day I saw him, and Hooligan became the newest member of our family. He loves his big sister Ruby so much that he may as well be velcroed to her side 24/7!
After relocating to East Hampton, I finally felt settled with my little 'family'. In the fall of 2008 I began doing some Trap/Neuter/Release work with feral cats at The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons. During our first marathon surgery day, a staffer brought a Chihuahua and Boston Terrier mix puppy into the room. She was one of 5 puppies that had been abandoned on a beach in Puerto Rico. A good samaritan had sent them up to ARF so they could find homes. I absolutely did not want another dog. It just happened. Miss Betty came home, and our family grew by one.
My dogs are absolutely the light of my life. I can't imagine life without them.
